Nestled on the banks of the mighty Clarence River is the town of Maclean. On the surface it looks like any other Australian town, but stop a while and you will find a wealth of history and character. It certainly lives up to its name of being the Scottish Town of Australia, with the Cairn up on the hill and hundreds of different tartans to be found painted on the town’s power poles, you will think you’ve been transported to the land of pipes and haggis. If your family has a tartan, check out the list at the Scottish Shop in River Street or at Ferry Park Gallery Tourist Information Centre.
The town’s excellent Museum is housed in the Stone Cottage on the corner of Wharf and Grafton Streets and after a look around carry on up Wharf Street to the Lookout. From there you can see for miles up and down the coast and out to the Pacific Ocean.

By now you probably need re-fuelling, once again you will be amazed at the array of food outlets, in fact you could stay here for a mini break, have breakfast, lunch and dinner for a week and never dine at the same place twice.

Fully refreshed, you can take at look at the town’s three Art Galleries, the Witzig Gallery, which specialises in Papua New Guinea contemporary art and Kingstudio, which features a constantly changing exhibition providing visitors with an opportunity to view a wide spectrum of media, are both located in town, while Ferry Park Gallery is situated on the river at the southern entrance to Maclean on the Highway and showcases around 60 local artists and artisans displaying a vast array of items for sale.

And at the very heart of the town is the Mighty Clarence River. Whether you are picnicking on the banks or throwing a line in, you can’t help admiring the sheer vastness before you. If you are coming for a few days don’t forget to bring your fishing rod because a catch is virtually assured and if you are touring the Maclean Showground, overlooking the river, is RV friendly.

So whether you chose a motel, hotel, self catering, the caravan park or the showground you are guaranteed to have a visit to remember.
